Thinking Aside

You’ve probably tried to sort this out yourself.

Often, people have by the time they get here.

They've thought about it, talked about it, read about it and tried to work out what they need to do differently. They may have made plans, changed things, given themselves a talking to and, in some cases, got on perfectly well for a while.

Sometimes that's enough. Sometimes, whatever they're dealing with keeps returning, or simply doesn't seem to shift in the way they expected it to.

It may just be that the usual ways of dealing with things aren't getting them any further.

Thinking Aside is my practice in Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy and coaching.

I'm Liz McConnell.

People come to me for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes there is something very specific they want to change. Sometimes they have a much less definite sense that something isn't quite right.

You don't need to arrive with a diagnosis or a neat explanation of what's going on. We can start with what you know and work from there.

You may already know why you're here. Or you may not.

Sometimes the thing that's bothering you is easy to name. Sometimes it isn't.

You might know exactly what you would like to change, or simply have the feeling that something isn't working as well as it used to.

There isn't a standard way of doing this.

My approach is Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy, which means the work starts with you and what is actually happening rather than with a fixed treatment for the label attached to the problem.

We will talk and look at the patterns around what is going on. We will consider what you have already tried and explore what might be useful now.

The work may include practical exercises, things to experiment with between sessions and hypnotic techniques where they are appropriate. The approach develops around you, the situation and what you want to change.

Understanding something and being able to change it aren’t always the same thing.

So what happens when we work together?

We will start with a conversation about what has brought you here.

From there, we'll work out what needs a little more attention and how we might approach it. There isn't a fixed programme to follow or a predetermined number of steps.

You'll find a fuller explanation of how I work, including what happens in a first session and how we decide what to do next, on the Working Together page.

I've been interested in how people make sense of things for a long time.

Before training as a Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapist, I spent many years leading and developing organisations, working alongside people and public services where situations were often complicated and there was rarely one obvious answer.

Over time, I became increasingly interested in why people do what they do and how they make sense of the situations they find themselves in. That interest, and a desire to understand people better, eventually brought me to Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy.

I've now been working as a Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapist for over 20 years.

If you're wondering whether this could be useful, we can have a conversation.

A discovery call gives us an opportunity to talk about what has brought you here, answer any questions you have and decide whether working together feels like the right next step.
